And she's out again...The injury blues

Call me grumpy.

After slowly building up the mileage I decided to try my luck at a race. Last Saturday. The Calf held up the way it should. So far, so good. During the race I felt some stiffish pain in my left foot, below the outer ankle. Figured it was just my body getting used to racing again.
Well, society should thank me for not pursueing a career in medicine. The pain was still there the next morning. Even more annoying: it's still there today. And I'm limping. It hurts when I walk around (not when I'm not walking), mainly when I'm 'pushing off' (know what I mean?). What the bleep? My MD told me to rest it and check back in 2 (2!!!!) weeks. He had no clue what could be causing the pain. Sucktastic...
I don't want to go all Negative Nancy/Debbie Downer on you, but this sucks. I've been nursing The Calf, slowly building up the mileage, and then this happens? What's up with that? I know there are worse things that could happen (I do!!!), but still...it sucks.
I think I deserve a cocktail and some greasy food right now! And some chocolate cheesecake. And another cocktail to go with that.
Cycling: 30 min

I've had a nagging calf pain similar to what you described. I've made a point of icing it after a run and massaging it nightly. We think I'm probably not being intentional enough in my stretching after runs and/or not replenishing electrolytes. I hope your pain goes away soon!

Step away from the cheesecake…

Sorry to hear about the injury but at least it happened during a cold month (silver lining?) and you won’t lose any fitness by not running for a week or two. The key is to focus on recovery and you’ll be back out there in no time.

Oh, those race photos are wonderful!! I’ve never (ever) seen a photo of me with both feet off the ground….*sigh*

All the best,

Ron

Noooooo sorry girl! Just try to stay positive, get your xtrain on and you'll be back before you know it!

Try some SPAM. Eat it. If it does not feel better after 30 minutes rub the remaining SPAM on the wounded area. Wait 24 and repeat till you no longer have the pain. This process usually takes 1-2 weeks. I'm not a doctor but I did stay in a Holiday Inn Express last night. Worse case if it does not work your dog will LOVE being around you.

I agree with Morgan. I took last week off to rest the ITB and cross training got me through so I didn't go crazy! Good luck!

Oh no, I'm so sorry that happened! But you know, better to rest it now rather than have it turn into something chronic. I wish a doctor had done that for me!

Why don't you get another opinion? Go see a PT maybe? Always makes me feel better to feel like I'm doing something about it, getting it figured out.

Good luck!

Now that cheesecake and cocktail talk makes me wonder if it is not worth suffering a bit...
But seriously, I am sorry. I've been battling Mr Achilles for months. I think yoga is really helping me because I have not had any pains lately. But then again I haven't been running that much either, only some.

Ah that's really shitty! Is injury be related to The Calf in any way or is it something completely new? let's hope rest will take care of it. Good luck with cross training...

@ all: Thanks! :)

@ Ron: These are the ONLY pics of me with my feet off the ground...I'm that slow...

@ Kevin: Ha! I might not try that. ;)

@ LaVonne: Thanks! Second opinion is scheduled for tonight! :)

@ Annika: Dank! Leuk nog een Nederlandse blogster die in het Engels schrijft! Gelukkig vind ik zwemmen en fietsen minder stom dan ik dacht. :)

maybe a more slow easy entry to racein next time. let's hope this is just one of those bizarre tweaks that takes care of itself with a day or two of rest

Sweetie... I am with you the whole way!!! In case you didn't know, I too am experiencing issues on the back side of left knee (PT suspects minor torn meniscus). Seeing my sports doctor on the 13th.

What I am trying to get at is... I empathize. 2 weeks is a lifetime for us runners. Not running 3 days in a row feels like suicide to our sport.

All the love hun and I hope after two weeks, it has mended itself and you can get back out there discomfort-free.

Keep the head up high. Lots of love way out west.

XOXO
